Name: Arjun Dundoo

Current Role: Investor, FirstMark

Why did you choose to apply to the Harlem Capital internship? Harlem Capital is a well-known name in NYC, and as I dove deeper into venture, the brand was right in front of me. The program has a reputation for being competitive, and the team is known for being genuinely excited to develop people. Beyond that, it was a chance to join a structured program that lets you see every side of the job.

How did the internship shape your career? My first taste of venture was a pre-MBA internship, but Harlem was where I saw the end-to-end process of being an investor. Sourcing, diligence, IC, the whole nine yards. It was my foot in the door and a real catalyst for my career: one internship led to the next, and the relationships I built with founders and other investors helped carry me forward. The Harlem team played a huge part of helping me get started.

What are you doing now? I’m investing in consumer tech from seed to B. It’s a really interesting time for consumer because today’s technology can deliver a new level of UX we simply haven’t seen before. Therefore, the opportunity to build delightful application-layer experiences is the most compelling it’s ever been. I’m grateful to spend time with founders building toward that!

Any advice for aspiring VCs? Just start. Figure out the verticals, themes, and stages that interest you, and be a sponge. Send what stands out to investors, from great companies to unique insights, as it’s a great way to provide value to them. In turn, you’ll add a node to your network. The bigger idea is “doing the job before having the job.” Keep in mind that the core of VC is relationship building, so be (tastefully) relentless about outreach.
