Why We Invested in Bluecore Energy

The world needs far more clean power than it can currently build. Traditional power plants take years to permit and construct, and the communities that need reliable energy most are often the last to get it. Bluecore Energy is taking a different path. Headquartered at the Port of Long Beach, Bluecore is building floating nuclear power plants: reactors on barges that can dock at a port and deliver zero-emission energy to a coastline far faster than a conventional plant. More than 3 billion people live within an hour of water. Bluecore wants to power all of them.

Great companies start with great founders, and Bluecore is no exception.

We invested at pre-seed earlier this year after getting to know the founder, Kofi Asante.

Nuclear is one of the most demanding categories in venture. It requires deep technical credibility, real regulatory fluency, and the ability to recruit people who could work anywhere. Kofi pairs an ambitious long-term vision with a command of the operational detail it takes to get there, and the team he has assembled reflects it: nuclear scientists, former Navy nuclear submarine and ship officers, and leaders from the rocket and automotive industries. Talent like that only forms around a founder people believe in.

The execution since has confirmed our conviction. In its first nine months, Bluecore secured a port terminal, took delivery of its barges, built a test reactor, began engagement with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard, and saw an MOU signed between the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration and the Port of Long Beach. Less than two months after coming out of stealth, the company announced an oversubscribed $50 million seed round led by Silverton Partners. That pace would stand out in any industry. In nuclear energy, it is exceptional.
